Highland Institute of Sport

Performance Lifestyle

The aim of The Highland Institute of Sport service is to integrate all the demands of an athlete’s life to provide them with the best training and competing environment possible.  Athletes are supported to take a proactive approach to the changes in their life so they don’t have a negative impact in their sporting performance.

The programme consists of three key performance areas:
  • Lifestyle Support
  • Education Guidance
  • Employment and Careers Advice
All athletes have an initial profile and follow-up work focuses on athlete action plans and annual reviews.  Many of the Highland Institute of Sport athletes are based at school, college or University, so much of the Performance lifestyle work revolves around contacts with these institutions.  Staff, athletes, parents and Highland Institute of Sport staff work together to overcome any conflicts between the academic demands of the institutions and the sporting demands placed on elite athletes.

Support provided varies from individual subject tutoring, purchase of learning resources, athlete loan of the laptop, consultation to place athletes on appropriate courses with arrangements for flexible study and examination opportunities, development of CV’s and complete job applications.  Ultimately, the aim encourages athletes to take responsibility for their own actions and to work independently with self-referral by the athletes to the adviser.
